Last week, workforce training expert Michelle Weise, author of the new book Long Life Learning: Preparing for Jobs That Don’t Even Exist Yet, was featured on the Harvard Business School Podcast “Managing the Future of Work” where solutions to the disconnects of talent utilization, skill-building, and job training were part of an in-depth discussion on reorienting opportunities to access work through learning.
Know the talent you have, instantly
One of the fundamental challenges that Weise points out, is that “We have these various language barriers in our ecosystem, where job seekers really struggle to translate their skills into things that sound marketable. Then employers really have a hard time sorting through all these different proxies for skills and capabilities.”
Most organizations can produce an inventory of tangible assets, but as Weise said “..the major problem is—and if you talk to huge employers, even some of the big tech giants, they have hundreds of thousands of workers at their fingertips—but they do not know what those people can actually do. They don’t know their exact skill sets.” Hitch, as Weise comments, is a solution that allows leaders to “look internally and understand the skill sets of your workforce.” It doesn’t have to be hard she goes on to say, “through some of these different kinds of platforms, what they’re able to do is, as people are inserting in, typing in their past experiences, these platforms are actually surfacing different kinds of competencies”.
AI-Platforms are essential for talent utilization
Platforms like Hitch, can solve other problems Weise describes that the pandemic has only served to spotlight, “we saw was just that void, that we just did not have a way for people to understand, especially at that human workforce competencies—baseline competencies—level, the kinds of skills that would help them move from retail over into human resources.” The power of AI-informed platforms, like Hitch, is to further insights into skills. “What we’re going to get better at, ideally in the near future, is to show how that actually you can take a look at your existing workforce and you will find if you actually leverage these different kinds of skills-based models…you can actually look internally and understand the skill sets of your workforce,” said Weise.
Why Talent Mobility is needed now
Churn, loss of capacity, institutional memory and context, and operating in a challenging economy were also discussed. It is clear that traditional talent operating models are falling short in today’s changing business environment. New talent operating models accelerate productivity, build efficiencies, and provide opportunity transparency resulting in an agile enterprise with greater employee inclusion and better employee experience. “What they can actually see from the people that they’ve laid off is, we really actually shouldn’t have laid off these 20 people, because they were nearly there for the strategic goals you have set for your company. They could have been skilled up” said Weise.
